چکیده

Data reported at an international meeting on the sensory and motile functions of cilia, including the primary cilium found on most cells in the human body, have thrust this organelle to the forefront of studies on the cell biology of human disease.

Intraflagellar Transport Is Required in Drosophila to Differentiate Sensory Cilia but Not Sperm

BACKGROUND Intraflagellar transport (IFT) uses kinesin II to carry a multiprotein particle to the tips of eukaryotic cilia and flagella and a nonaxonemal dynein to return it to the cell body. IFT particle proteins and motors are conserved in ciliated eukaryotes, and IFT-deficient mutants in algae, nematodes, and mammals fail to extend or maintain cilia and flagella, including sensory cilia. In ...

Branchial Cilia and Sperm Flagella Recruit Distinct Axonemal Components

Eukaryotic cilia and flagella have highly conserved 9 + 2 structures. They are functionally diverged to play cell-type-specific roles even in a multicellular organism. Although their structural components are therefore believed to be common, few studies have investigated the molecular diversity of the protein components of the cilia and flagella in a single organism. Here we carried out a prote...

Specialized Cilia in Mammalian Sensory Systems

Cilia and flagella are highly conserved and important microtubule-based organelles that project from the surface of eukaryotic cells and act as antennae to sense extracellular signals. Moreover, cilia have emerged as key players in numerous physiological, developmental, and sensory processes such as hearing, olfaction, and photoreception. Genetic defects in ciliary proteins responsible for cili...

Signaling the differences between cilia.

Calcium ion channels that determine many of the properties of cilia are different in motile cilia as compared to primary cilia and flagella.

Sensory reception is an attribute of both primary cilia and motile cilia.

A recent cluster of papers has shown that motile cilia in the respiratory and reproductive tracts of humans and other mammals can exhibit sensory functions, a function previously attributed primarily to non-motile primary cilia. This leads to a new paradigm that all cilia and flagella (both motile and primary) can mediate sensory functions. However, examination of the literature shows that evid...
